When did you first become interested in doing animation?
I've always been interested in animation in all it's forms. It's what most of us from the TV generation grew up with.
I found it a great way to communicate ideas when I was at University.
How did you get started?
I got started working on 3d designs for architecture then progressed to anthropomorphic ideas later.
What kind of training do you have?
I'm self trained for the most part but have spent time at some of the best effects houses cutting my teeth. I've also got a Masters in directing from the Australian Film School.
What do you like about animation?
Animation is limitless. The end of the line is your imagination.
Who/What are your influences?
I like to fuse live action and
animation. That's what interests me. The line between real and unreal. I cast a wide net for inspiration. It ranges from street art to feature films.

What inspired your story?
I wrote "Freaks" for the Australian Directors Guild to promote the annual conference. This years theme was creativity. Filmmakers of all kinds have fragile egos and can feel both above and below the rest of us.
I liked the idea of filmmakers being ostricised for their unique abilities growing up then finding their tribe as adults. The extra features like the eye, ear, arms and mouth are representational of the different skills.
What techniques were used?
It was shot on 35mm and tracked using Syntheyes. I built 3d geometry and mapped it using a photogrammetry technique.
The 3d tracking allowed for perspective change allowing the elements to fit. The eye required some additional animation deformers with blinks timed to fit dialogue/performance with meaning.
Were there any big challenges?
The idea is simple. The biggest challenge is to deliver great performances. At the end, that's what we care about.
