We Are Impressed

THE COMPETITION WAS FIERCE
aniBoom Awards 2008

With so many great animation submissions to this year's aniBoom Awards, we're glad there were so many prizes to go around. The winning films won out over a thousand other entries based on their Views, Votes and Virality. It's a mixed bag, with something for everyone. Music videos, dramas, comedies, more abstract stuff and even a show reel succeeded in getting the people's attention.

So let's take a look at just a few of the reasons this year's competition was so tough.

all hell is breaking loose cartoon animation After getting attention for his winning entry from last year, "Red Ocean", Kenny Frankland was able to get more work on music videos. The last time we checked up on him, he was head to the grindstone pulling together "All Hell is Breaking Loose", for the Drum n' Bass group London Elektricity. His funky rave party for the undead was completed in only four weeks. Dancing gargoyles and a skeleton trumpet band are just a couple of the creative touches Frankland came up with for this all out animated jam. Watch "All Hell is Breaking Loose" now!

ma cherie cartoon image This animated short by film student Nara Youn matches up a little girl who just wants a cherry with a chef who is obstinate that such a modest desert can't be allowed. What stands out the most in "Ma Cherie" is the great acting and wonderful sense of movement, though the modeling ain't too shabby either. When the chef finally does comes up with an amicable compromise, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

inner scribe animated movie Take a trip inside animator Valdis Baskirovs's creative mind in "Inner Scribe", a short hand drawn 2D animation. Smooth movement and flawless transitions make you wonder how he did it all without a computer. You can really see the painstaking attention to detail. Each object is accompanied by a delicate and graceful shadow that moves with it. I was particularly delighted by the lovely sequence involving a swimming octopus. The music, classy and playful, is a perfect match for this old-skool feel film.
