About US:
The Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film is one of the largest festivals for animated film in the world. It addresses both an interested audience and industry professionals, and offers an overview of t
Programs:
From April 26 to May 1, the 14th Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film will turn Stuttgart into the capital of animated film. At the heart of the festival are five competitions. In the International Competition the world’s best animated short films can be seen. Young Animation is the title of the programme in which the best student films from all over the world are presented to both jury and audience. In the competition Tricks for Kids the best short films for children over the age of six are shown (a tip for adults, too). Animated Series is the competition for the best TV series. There is a programme for each age-group (pre-school, kids, adult and family). In the competition Animovie the best animated feature films will be screened. In this competition there are films specifically for children, teenagers and adults. A list of all the competition films can be found in the press kit.
In total, approximately 500 films can be seen at the festival, 160 of them in the competitions. 1,600 films were submitted. “The move from a biennial to an annual festival has worked very well. In 2007 we have had more submissions than in the previous year – which shows that the animated film sector is booming,” stressed Ulrich Wegenast, artistic director of the festival. Film Series, Presentations and Parties Alongside the competitions there are numerous other film series.
Festival Location:
Schloßstraße 84 D-70176 Stuttgart
Other Activities:
The workshop by the master of animated film, Bill Plympton, promises to be one of the highlights of the festival – and both entertaining and fascinating. A screenplay workshop Writing for Animation will take place as part of the focus on screenplay, along with the panel discussion on “Writing for Animation” on Tuesday, May 1. Workshops for children with the well-known producer of animated films Jürgen Haas (Sendung mit der Maus and other films) and school events on Friday morning (04/27) will round off the programme for children and teenagers. The Festival Garden: Atmosphere at the Schloßplatz
The festival takes place right in the middle of Stuttgart’s city centre – in the cinemas Metropol and Gloria. Under the name Festival Garden the expanded Open-Air Programme at the Schloßplatz will create that special festival atmosphere. In collaboration with the Stuttgart Region Pop Office and the Mannheim Pop Academy, live bands will be playing in the Festival Garden from 7pm onwards. Following this, highlights from the festival programme can be seen on the open-air screen – free of charge, of course. The two-storey marquee, the Festival Lounge, is the central meeting place for all festival visitors. Here, animation artists will explain how they made their films and answer questions from the audience.
